This 'Alionushka' was growing as a ground cover plant at Blooms gardens in Bressingham and looks very effective. Before this I have only ever seen her reaching for the sky when in flower.

Good point Roelie, hadn't thought of that. Isn't it horrible when the flowers get stained? Roelie, Have you heard of c 'Black Madonna'?

It does look gorgeous... I think I would have huge problems with slugs here...but if to keep the vines a little up on the creeping conifers... May be next years something to try out! :) Susan, please do tell more about Black Madonna! Any pictures? The name rings the bell to any Polish. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Madonna_of_Cz%C4%99stochowa

Malgorzata, I did take a photo of 'Black Madonna' the stems on it are rather thick and brittle. It has quite a large flower on it. Regarding buds and flowers there are and have been few, maybe about six altogether. There was just the one flower and the one bud on the plant when I took the photo and the flower was chewed quite a bit too. The flower has a lovely velvety glow to it.

Thank you Susan! The color is stunning! May be it is a weaker variety or I am sure 'Black Madonna' would be more popular. Something like 'Jan Pawel II'? It could be unconscious influence of the name or the breeder but I do really see a beauty in it. Thank you for sharing Susan!

I think if I were going to use Alionushka as a groundcover I'd have to plant the rootball and hide it about 4 feet from where I wanted the blooms to peek out. Mine is VERY tall.

Yes Nancy 'Alionushka' does get very tall. They have either made an excellent job of hiding all the barer looking stems under some other plants or they have found a way of getting 'Alionushka' to flower on a short plant. It looked very effective though.
