This is Dominica
and from the back side
I have no plans for next year for the moment. I have been busy sowing seeds and some of the results are here.
And yes, it has been an awful weather to-day here too, lots of rain and thunderstorm.

Hmmm, guilty as charged, yup, I'm an enabler, but I'm in very good company here!! I don't know a better group of top-notch enablers! I'm trying to be good, like Ingrid I have a lot of seedlings coming along so really don't 'need' any more named cultivars. But, if Hanajima or Mary Rose happened to be available ...

Ingrid, very nice work with your seedlings. I have never seen rain like this before in the summer. It has rained solid for almost two days, sometimes torrential. I was determined not to let it put me off yesterday so I went outside yesterday in waterproofs. Worked for about two hours and came back in looking like a mud wrestler. Your Dominika is beautiful! Very nice from both sides. Can you compare it to some of the other blues like Prince Charles or Blue Angel? Alison, you were just the push I needed to start again with txR. I love that scent! My old one was wonderful but too large for the place it was in. When I saw your photo, I got a flash of inspiration and now know exactly where to put it. All will be revealed later. Roelie, they must be very good if they stand out in a garden so full of clematis like yours. Do you have Wisley? The color reminds me of Aotearoa.

Here's my list from the Brushwood and Chalk Hill. I probably went overboard too because of the closing sale at Chalk Hill. There are a few that will get replaced that aren't good performers or get mildrew every year like Rooguchi. I bought Maria Cornelia right after Mara first posted a photo :) Maria Cornelia Frances Rivis Rhapsody Sizaia Ptitsia Lincolnshire Lady Perrins Pride Golden Harvest viticella Mary Rose viticella Wallenburg Aotearoa Vostok I found your comments about Blue Angel very interesting, Jane. Here, Prince Charles is a much prettier color. Blue Angel is very pale - too pale for my liking. It's funny how climate, soil and placement can change the look of clematis. I did this comparison in early July:

I should stop reading these lists. Every time I do, my order list just gets a little longer. Susan, I saw Frances Rivis at a spring fair this year but couldn't make up my mind between the only two plants left. Of course by the time I had made my way around the stands again, they had both been taken. The blooms are incredibly beautiful and although the plants I saw were only small in their pots, the blooms were huge! I have Blue Dancer which I love but I'm wondering how it compares. Does anyone here grow both of them? Susan, interesting comparison of the three. Prince Charles does have the edge if the color blue is what you admire most. To me though, Blue Angel has more contrast and nicer shape and looks lovely against a darker background. One of mine is in full sun so almost fades to white. The one in partial shade fares better and keeps its delicate color longer.

I knew I shouldn't have read this post. My already full garden and seedling pots tell me I don't have room for more, but Maria Cornelia would have to come home if it were available here.

I'm so happy to hear your comments on Frances Rivas, Jane! It was available for so long on the Chalk Hill site and no one else seemed to want it. I was thinking I had made a bad choice.

Quite the contrary, Susan. I believe it is an excellent choice. However I should add that I believe there are two forms of Frances Rivis in circulation; the English form and the Dutch form. From what I have read, the English form is close to Blue Dancer (which I have) and the Dutch form has shorter, wider and darker blue flowers. I hope that yours will turn out to be like the one I saw at the fair (undoubtedly the English form and a delightful sky blue).

Heather, do you think this FR is the English or Dutch form? I have only a baby Dancer that hasn't flowered yet, so I can't compare yet.
Whichever it is, I just love it and am going to plant it in a more prominent spot than it was planted potted last year, after I finish planting the roses (yes, you guys finally got to me, so I picked up a few to try this year). This has been a miserable Summer here, with almost constant rain and no sunshine, so those of mine that haven't rotted are taking their sweet time in blooming. And I have gotten waaay behind in the work that needs to be done. Have only had time to go around after work on the better days to pick of wilted or blackspotted leaves & the worst of the weeds. I am expecting about 30 (2 orders) from Chalk Hill sometime this month, mostly type 3s & 1s, and have to dig out a lot of older perennials to have space for them. Got to get back to the roses, today is nice but hot. Marie

Marie, I am no expert on the two forms. All I know is what I've read. Whatever yours is, it's a beauty and I'm not surprised that you want to show it off in a better spot. Thirty clems are a lot to find space for. Good luck.

Thank you, Ingrid. Nice big bloom on Dominika compared to Blue Angel. Also more color variation. Both are lovely. Do you get more flowers with Dominika?

My Dominica has never achieved the size of Blekitny Aniol. However, Dominica has a larger more solid bloom for me, a richer colour. BA blooms seem to be attractive to nibbling insects in my neck of the woods. I love Blue Dancer's sophisticated simplicity and it can get huge. I've had it for years and the bunnies destroyed it this past winter, but its foliage is back with a vengeance now! :)

Marie, nice to hear Blue Dancer gets large. Mine is on a wall near a laburnum tree so I hope it will climb high. This is second year and it looked very good in the spring.
