Has anyone in zone 4 had success with growing and overwintering Florida Sieboldii? I'm very tempted to order it next Spring.

Joan, who are you thinking of ordering with? Are there catalogues out already?

Joan, this spring I planted florida "Viennetta" up against the south side of my home. I had found the plant at Safeway, it was rather small and neglected, though I snapped it up while I had the opportunity!

Why not grow it in a big pot, and bring into a bit of shelter for the winter?

I haven't even cheched out any Canadian sites yet. It's just everytime I see someone post a picture of one, I want one. Was just thinking ahead, that if I planted it against the basement wall, it may just survive with a little extra protection.

I planted one this spring, a small one from Vesey's. To my surprise, it grew to be about 4 feet all and gave me about half a dozen blooms. I plan to put a little chicken wire enclosure areound it and fill that with leaves to try to keep it over the winter here in Zone 4b/5a. I had three little problems with it: first, the earwigs absolutely loved the blooms and I had to finally put out some earwig bait; second, my daughter's Boston Terrier abslutely loved the blooms and I had to tie her up out of reach after she ate two of the six; and third, the little munchy critters (moles or voles or mice) liked the stems and ate one of the three off at the base. I am going to take a cutting next week to try to keep in the house just in case it doesn't make it through the winter....It is a very beautiful flower....

Oh Julie, I hope it survives for you. Be sure and let us know next Spring...either way. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. I've had glads near the basement wall for years, and they stay all year. They do fine. Must be getting good heat from my basement wood stove.

I planted one in '06 and it survived one winter. This year it was a no-show :( I even had it planted next to the house in a sheltered position.
