A friend gave us this a couple of weeks back, it is a large plant and we have now put it in a large pot. We were told, that not only did this one flower in Spring, it flowers again later in the year. There was indeed a flower on it when we got it. If anyone has this one, can they tell me, if, on a well established plant, there are a large amount of flowers produced on 'Propertius' later in the year?

Dear Susan
'Propertius' is one of the cultivars in the Roman Authors series by Dr. Johnson. It is a cross with C. koreana var. fragrans H38 as mother. It flowers richly in spring and sparsely later on. The mother plant in our garden is perhaps dead (it may well be in the glass-house though, there are many plants there)but we have vegetatively propagated children outside. It is one of the cultivars propagated for the Swedish market and perhaps elsewhere.

Mine does produce flowers off and on later in summer, but not a great number at a time. I like it very much and wouldn't want to be without it. The seed heads are attractive as well.

I have a seedling of Propertius which is a prolific spring bloomer and is fragrant so I'm sure the named variety is wonderful. I also have a large koreana v. fragrans plant that produces tons of flowers for a long period, then produces a smaller amount starting now. The koreanas do seem to tend to be easy bloomers.

Bengt, does the plant C. koreana var. fragrans H38 still exist?

Dear Alison
I think that there is a plant in the glass-house but I am not sure if the outside one is still alive. There are other persons having the plant so I am quite sure that several copies of the original is available in Sweden.

That's very good to know Bengt. The series of fragrant offspring from H38 x Rosy O'Grady were really outstanding and it would be interesting to see more crosses using H38.
