Iris 'Katharine Hodgkin' has started early this year, but that haves everything.....

Such a soft periwinkle blue color, bringing the promise of spring with it.

I think this is the best iris reticulata there is - it attracts everyone who sees it!

all my iris reticulata flower the first year but only one or so the next year and then I only get leaves. What is the secret of those?
I love them but as they won`t flower the joy slips away.

I think the secret is to not be very nice to them. I don't water, don't feed (just top with a bit of fresh compost after they have flowered) and never move them.

Mine, only two years old, have already made a congested clump. I do nothing special for these or any reticulatas.

What a shot Mara! But your soil must be better suited for them, if I remember you mentioned it is a bit sandy.

What do they do in clay, sulk and rot?

Frank Elder has finally joined in. I think the photo shows the difference to KH

Mara

A lot of people would say that Frank Elder has a virus - the blue streaks are not normal. My early blooms were like this, but later blooms seem OK.

Hope I am not the bearer of bad tidings

I was surprised to see those streaks, in fact. I'm quite sure they weren't there last year. If it is a virus, it doesn't seem to weaken the plants - in fact the bulbs have multiplied, though not as much as KH which has grown so congested in three years it now looks like this:

I hate the prospect of having to dig them out to separate them.

Aren't they lovely? They are some of my favorites!

They will multiply so rapidly and you will see them in massive groups in the next few years.

I planted about 5 of them about 5 years ago and this is what they look like now.

If you like Katharine Hodgkin then you will adore Lady Beatrix Stanley - another reticulate but a true blue.
