We're in Southern Utah, still, Mara. There's 5 feet of snow at our Huckleberry Mountain House in Washington. This has been a very snowy winter in Northeast Washington, with even more snow than the last deep winter, which was '96/'97, when the spring melt brought floods everywhere. The forest mushrooms were amazing in the summer and fall. I've been hearing stories about collapsing roofs -- mainly on barns and sheds, but a few of the newer houses and mobile homes have had problems, too, especially the ones with low-pitch roofs. Photos from 96/97: (The large mushroom was over 14 inches across, and the wreath of dried musrooms and lichens had fascinating colors of mushrooms, even bright purple.) I apologize for the terrible quality of the photos. They are photographs of film prints I made with my first digital camera, the Minolta D'Image 5, which was brand new at the time.

In that case, I'm surprised they are up so late. I hope your mountain house has withstood this year's snowfall!

That was my question too. We're still under snow here in SLC, and more expected. Whoop-de-doo (NOT!, LOL).

Come visit us in Dixie sometime, Gloria. We have a handy guest room. You too, Sharon, though you have somewhat farther to travel! Mara, we're in the desert here, so our nights can still be quite cold even though the days are often lovely and warm. The cold nights must slow down the spring bulbs. I remember last year, on March 11, taking photos of fruit trees in full bloom, and the narcissus were already past it. My daffodils are just poking their noses out. I think everything is going to be blossoming at the same time. Yes, Arlene, crocus give me that same feeling. Snowdrops are even earlier, and lovely, especially some of yours, Ann, but the color that the crocus bring is like a song of spring.

Buds and blossoms, what's the count? Twenty-three, and it will mount! Last year we didn't have any spring bulbs, and I've spent most of my life in climates where crocus didn't bloom until late March or even April, so it's really exciting for me to see them bloom this early. We did live in Hawaii for a while, and California, but these bulbs don't flower in warm places unless you dig them up and chill them, so I've never seen this before. I hope you'll all forgive me for getting carried away.

I think you will find we all get carried away over one plant or another Anne:) so no forgiveness necessary. I live in a climate where crocus thrive and yet you still have at least 2 more than I do lol! Must rectify that this year.

Thanks, Moira. These bulbs were just planted last fall. It remains to be seen how well they do here. I have high hopes. I planted them at the maximum recommended separation, so the beds look a bit sparse. I'm hoping they fill in, if the baking heat of summer doesn't get to them. Fingers crossed for luck, Anne

Four little beds in bloom. A bit sparse but with luck they will fill in. I knew the blossoms would be tiny, but they are tinier even than I imagined. Very early, though, which is what I was hoping.

Very cute and colorful. They sure show up nicely against the red rock. I love your snow and mushroom pics, too. Wow!

The crocus blossoms keep growing larger, though they'll have to do more than that to fill in. There are a couple of bare spots in the beds. Cats dig there, I know -- including our cat
so I can't really complain. They love the light weight lava rock that serves as mulch.

I'm relatively new having only posted a few times this year. I'm jealous of your crocus! We usually start to see crocus in late Feb early March but still haven't seen any of the crocus planted last fall. The ground is slushy/frozen and sleet/snow is hanging on. I'm enjoying the winter and don't want to push time but....bloom crocus, bloom! Of course, I'm still not in shape for the gardening season ;-). Thank you for your photos!

You have Fozzie's twin, Moira! And Fozzie used to get fat every winter before we started coming here to escape the ice. She was shaped like a watermelon for northern winters. Thanks, DJ. Not much of a garden here yet, but in time we'll get there.
