Hi folks. About four years ago I got some free red tulip bulbs from Brecks as part of a roses order I placed. They were small and I never thought they would amount to much. However, they have increased in number each year and give us a wonderful early display of their red color. I have no idea what the name of the variety is. My wife and I would like to plant more of them when the time is right to do so. What are some of your favorite red and perhaps yellow tulip varieties? Stan the Roseman

My favorite red tulip is "The red riding hood" http://www.mobot.org/gardeninghelp/plantfinder/Plant.asp?Code=R240&Submit=GO and my yellow favorite is "Bokhara bright gem"
Both only 6-10" high, but multiples easily.

I like these really bright colours as early as possible in the season, and then they can't be bright enough. To me the best of the reds is praestans fuselier, the colour is so red it is impossible to photograph.
I have them in various places in the garden but the ones on this photo were already here before we moved to this house, in other words they are over 20 years old. They grow in a sea of ivy and yet return every year and even multiply. It is a very easy tulip to please. Another good and early one is fosteriana 'Red Emperor' I leave yellow to the daffodils.

If it's fairly low growing, early blooming and multiplies readily it may be some kind of species tulip. I know Brecks has some too. Have you checked their wab site for it? I find for the most part the fancier hybrid tulips don't multiply well or at all for me. My mom used to have a huge bed full of Red Emperor tulips and it was a glorious sight each spring.

Thanks folks. They are not red emperor as those blooms are too tall and not red enough. Someone told me they might be some appledorn or something like that. I will have to go check their website. Love the "Bokhara bright gem" Tom! Very very nice! Stan the Roseman

My two favorite reds are "Appeldoorn" and "Ile de France"--the latter is the most vivid red. Yellow--"Yellow Appeldoorn". I don't think I've tried any other yellows. Hmmmm . . . might be time to branch out into other varieties.

Thanks Barbara. I am feeling it is time to really check things out too. Since we are looking at planting some new tulips, might as well dream a little too. :o) Stan the Roseman

Stan, I really like the Gregii tulips. They're some of the earliest tulips to bloom, and have 5-7 blossoms on one plant. My favorite is Toronto -- a gorgeous tomato red, about 12" high.

Stan, I really like T. kaufmanniana 'Showwinner'. It is a water-lily type species tulip with beautiful mottled foliage and bright red blooms in March. Don't have a close-up but here they are in a raised bed.

I second the suggestion for Little Red Riding Hood Tulips. I have "Fringed Red Riding Hood" (don't know if it's different. What's nice is they come out very early and their foliage is interesting (and low -- always good when it starts browning). Plus, they really grow taller even as they keep their blooms. Last Spring:
