We went to Ripley Castle yesterday to see their National Hyacinth collection. I took photos of a few favorites. Hope you enjoy. I just wish I could capture the scent for you. We could smell it from quite a distance. Peter Stuyvesant

How wonderful. Harlow Carr in Yorkshire used to always have trials which I found fascinating. I always used to love planting my forced hyacinths in the garden, after a couple of years of settling down they would reliably perform in a wonderful, beautifully scented way!

Sue, I am glad you mentioned this. I have adopted this habit in my own garden. Despite what I have read about hyacinths, it has been my experience that they will return year after year and perform well. Has anyone else tried this with success?

I have many hyacinths in my garden that started out as forced Christmas time blooms for indoors but after a couple of years they come back reliably in the garden.

Then is it only in the first year or two that they don't do so well? If this is the case, I'm going to plant a lot more this autumn.

In my experience and I'm sure Ann would agree, it's only the bulbs that were forced for Christmas flowering that take a year or two to settle down and build up resources to flower again. I'm sure the 'normal' bulbs would be fine, the unprepared ones you can buy for bedding. It's just that I could never throw mine away! :)

Wow. That would be a place I'd travel quite a distance to get to. I love your photos. I think Hyacinth is so perfect and I'm amazed that flowers can be any color, including bright orange and also the pure blue that so many other plants can't attain (though roses and clems may try!).

This has been my experience. In Fall 2006, I planted a bunch of new bulbs including Hyacinth ("Festival") and a bunch of tulips (Marilyn, Red Riding Hood, and a few other varieties). The following Spring 2007 I got a nice display of all the bulbs. The next Spring (now).....not all of my tulip bulbs came back. Some varieties don't seem to have made it at all. But....my hyacinth almost doubled in size. Every single one of the many planted bulbs came back. I would know if it were otherwise b/c they are planted in a row and there would be a spot missing. So...at least for the Festival hyacinth, it looks like their ability to come back is so much greater than tulips! Here's a pic of Spring 2007 and Spring 2008 that I posted in another thread:

Those are beautiful hyacinths, Charlene. I'm a great fan of anything with fragrance. Thanks for posting.
