Anyone tried this. I dug up one plant, and peeled a couple scales off. Seems really easy to produce a mass of clone baby lily's in a short time. Heres a web page that tells in detail how you go about it. http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/propagation_seed_starting/105602

I picked up some Vermiculite the other day, and today I dug up some Lily's and collected around 20-25 scales off different plants. Hopefully in a couple months I will see some growth on the scales.

TerryK, will do. I don't mind waiting for them to mature and flower, it's free plants after all. I know the bulbs are pretty cheap to buy, but when you want hundreds growing, it can get costly. I have many seed pods growing on plants that I had crossed or self-pollinated, but I thought scaling might be a little faster to get flowers, plus scaling would be the same exact as the donor plant, seeds will vary in colors/shapes. I was surprised no one had commented on this. I thought, what a easy way to get many free plants in a short time.

This is great to know even if I never try it. On occasion I will be digging to plant something else and slice a bit of a lily bulb off. It is nice to know that I probably haven't killed it.

This is the classic way to reproduce new bulbs and it does work. Let us know how you get on.

I checked on the progress, little bulb like bumps are starting to grow on the scales.

My bag of scales are really starting to take off, the scales are growing roots and small bulbs. Most scales have 1 bulb, but I noticed a couple had two or three growing. What I was wondering, do you feed them with a diluted fert? Miracle Grow?

I thought I would take a picture of my progress with the scales, so far their doing super. I'm tempted to dig up some more bulbs and start another bag. I have over 40 scales in the bag, wish I had known about this years ago, this is too easy.

Guff, they are looking good. The link you posted in the beginning of this thread references the Mid Atlantic Lily Society which also has a how to on scaling lilies. At the bottom of the page is an area where you can send a question to the author. Maybe if you write thisperson she will give you an answer on fertilizing. Here's the link- http://www.midatlanticlily.org/MLS_online2/3education/3topics/3topic_scaling.html

TerryK thanks, there using spagnum moss, so I assume the scales are getting some nutrients. I think a well diluted Miracle Grow, would be ok. I did read that the growing bulbs get their food from the scales, but I would think since the scales also grow roots, they need some food to continue to grow and to be healthy.

It was such a beautiful Fall day today, I decided to dig up some Lily's and collect some scales for another bag. I would suggest if you know which Lily's are by name, put them into different bags. Since I don't know half of the lily's names that I have, I'm sticking them into the same bag, I will wait till they flower to rearrange them according to size.

Guff that looks fantastic-or at least to a gardener! Such possibilities lay there on that towel. You should write a book on how to propagate as you do seem so interested in it and good at it.

There's a little over 50 scales there, the ones I started awhile back , have 1-4 bulbs growing, so I figure within 6 months of doing this, I could have 100-400 babies growing, maybe double that, since it has been only 2 months. In no time you could have thousands growing. With my old fashion Tiger Lily project and now these, I'm going to have my hands full. I have yet to dig up a Tiger Lily, and pick some scales, I doubt I will, since all the babies I get every year off of the mature plants is plenty. I have a couple ideas TerryK, no book, but I have something else planned. It wouldn't take much effort, since I have lots of authoring software, video camera and DVD burner.

Well, you can't just say "something else planned". Now we all(or I do anyway) want to know what you have planned.
