I'd like to purchase some flower bulbs online. Tulips for sure, but I haven't made my mind up on everything I want to purchase yet. I was curious if any of you had any web sites you rely on for bulbs, or if you have had bad experiences with any particular company or companies. I have purchased from one or two in the past, but can't remember which ones they were. One may have been Dutch Gardens. I didn't have any problem with them, but I was just wondering what other options were out there that were reliable. Thanks in advance :)

I have ordered from White Flower Farm, John Scheepers, Dutch Gardens, Park Seed, Paradise Gardens and Van Bourgondien to name a few. While it's a little late for mail order you could try. Also check your local garden centers.

Thanks Arlene :) I've only heard of a couple of the places you've named, so I'll have to check the others out. I've tried a couple of local places but for some strange reason, I haven't seen many bulbs around for sale at the places which normally sell them.

Lisa, if you hold out a few more days you'll find that some of them will be putting things on sale. Another good source- Bluestone Perennials.

Lisa, I've bought from John Scheepers, like ARlene mentioned, but for large quantities, I buy from its sister company Von Englen. Lisa, the quality is fantastic---large, healthy bulbs and when you buy in quantity, the price is right! About $35.00-$40.00 for 100. You can check their catalog online also. John Scheepers has the same bulbs but in smaller quantities.

I've been very happy with Brent and Becky's Bulbs--good selection, good service. They did something I've never had happen before--I ordered the climbing bulb Gloriosa in a yellow form, and before it bloomed they emailed me that the one in their test garden had not bloomed yellow, and in case mine was also not yellow they would replace it free. When it bloomed it wasn't yellow, and they did replace it. I think most places, even the good ones, would have waited for me to fuss. Really appreciated that!

Why not go international - unless there are phytosanitary considerations. I am sure you all know Janis Ruksans in Latvia, but do you know Leonid Bondarenko in Lithuania. His website is www.litbulbgarden.com - worth spending time just admiring the pictures. Fantastic quality and excellent prices, especially if you are looking for the choicer bulbs

Thank you very much for the link! The selection is wonderful - especially (but not only) the irises. It's too late for this year, like Ruksans he apparently requires fairly early orders. But next year for sure! The prices are indeed very reasonable! I've spent more money than I care to admit at Ruksans in past years, so it will only be fair to give his Lithuanian colleague a fair share :)

Increase in gas has impacted bulb prices among other things. Keep an eye on your regular nurseries/garden centers around your area. Not the big box stores. Sometime in the next week or two they might even give them away. Granted, the selection might be limited, but heyyy! If nothing else they'll be so deeply discounted they might as well be giving them away. As long as the ground isn't frozen, you can still plant them. The first year I discovered freebies at Millaegers (sp) in Wisconsin, we were in looking at Christmas stuff and I realized the sign on the bulb boxes said help yourself. I think it the 20th I was planting bulbs. :) If you want to check a site's rep before ordering, go see if it's listed in the Garden WatchDog. I've been satisfied with Brent&Becky and they get a high rating at the GWD as well: http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/18/

It never fails. It's always nice out when I order that last B&B order and it is always frozen by the time they come. I am going to try a couple of containers this year with the tulips. I will keep them in the attic - no insulation. Blaine, no bulb giveaways here. There are too many people around. Years ago they did it. Now they would rather they sit and rot than give more than 50% off. Sometimes we get 75%. The exception is Lowes but they usually don't have what I want. B&B is often cheaper for me. Plus, their bulbs are always in great condition.

why do they have to get so greedy?! Maybe "non-gardeners" are in charge now. Real ones always seem to give. I watch summer as well. At Stein's I've found shopping carts outside at the entrance to their plant area with near-give-away prices. Picking through them has gotten me some callas, arum and iris a couple of times.

I guess it is because people like me always wait! Also, the variety of bulb offerings have been cut back considerably by most places. Especially daffodils. I do get lucky sometimes. NotMartha, looks like a good deal. Hope you post some pictures of them.
