I have just started growing perenial geraniums and some are very leggy. should I be cutting them back? do they rebloom during a growing season or just one big flush of bloom? Thanks for any help you can give me. I don't remember which ones I have. Apparently there are many different varieties. BeBe

If I am able to keep up with my deadheading, I cut back after every bloom cycle. I do this with most plants and in my warm zone I will get many blooms throughout the season. Carol

I have rosannes which bloom quite a long time. I have trimmed them back 2 times this year. When you trim them they lose the leggyness and start getting more compact which shows the flowers more and they are a bit taller.

When you say cut back - you actually mean you take of all the greenery??? I'd be so afraid!

I don't cut mine back until the first frost, but they bloom all summer. I'm not sure which ones I have because they were here when i moved into my house.

We have grown geraniums for years and we also winter them over. The best way to keep your geraniums blooming is to remove the blooms when they begin to turn brown and lose color. You can do this by cutting the stem of the bloom down about half way. The plant then has more energy to continue blooming. Also, be sure to remove any leaves that are turning brown as this will also increase the energy for the plant to continue growing. Geraniums continue to bloom throughout the season and if you decide to winter them over, they will cease to bloom for a period of time during their “rest” cycle.
