A friend would like to know the species of this Geranium from China. The leaves smell like bubblegum! Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Gorgeous, Carol! I'm not sure I'd like the bubblegum scent but the flower is lovely. I hope someone can identify it.

Well, I don't think I'm up to an ID, but if you have access to it, Peter Yeo's book, Hardy Geraniums: Second Edition, has an extremely detailed section on keying out geraniums. Some samples or straight-on photos of the leaves would be required, in particular. I'm curious... how is it that your friend knows it's from China, but doesn't know the species? Was it acquired as an unknown species from the vendor, or was the name just lost later? (Just wondering how significant and specific the "China" clue is.)}

Thanks for the help. I don't have the book but may be able to borrow it from a friend. There has been a great deal of interest in Chinese plants. Many gardeners here have ordered species which notoriously have been mislabeled. It was definitely not correctly named. Leaves and buds:

carol I received two geraniums from China,one with similar foliage to the one you show.The names attached were T-72 Geranium refractum T-75 Geranium yunanense when they flowered both were rubbish.One in particular yunanaense spreads like mad by runners.I have no reason to believe these are the correct names

Thank you , Tony. Geraniun hispidissimum is likely the ID. It was keyed out according to the Geranium book. Too bad your plants were rubbish! Don't ever let Geranium thunbergii or its variegated form, 'Jester's Jacket' loose in your garden. I'll bet I've removed several hundred this year and am still finding more!

Eeeeek!! I have just had one of my seedlings identified as Geranium thunbergii. If it is likely to be a real pest then I don't want to keep it!!
