I have a new G. 'Rozanne' planted in a spot that holds moisture. It has loved the moisture this summer but I am worried about it having wet feet all winter. I am in zone 6 (USA). Our temps get down to 20F/-15C with little or no snow cover in a normal winter. Can it withstand being damp all winter or should I move it now?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Geraniums are not fond of 'having wet feet all winter' and I am sure Rozanne is no exception. As it is a really good long-flowering plant it is definitely worth the trouble of lifting, potting up for winter, and then re-planting in Spring.

I wouldn't keep it in a pot all winter. With those temps I think you'd lose it. If you're going to lift it, move it somewhere drier and replant it. Could you maybe split it and leave some where it is now and replant another piece? Do you mulch your plants? You say you don't get much snow cover.

My plant did wonderfully well in my Maine garden but I had good snow cover.

Hi Sue,

I've overwintered perennials in pots in my garage with success for years. I'm hoping the Geranium will do the same. I can't split it as it is too new and small. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on it.

A bigger problem is Geranium phaeum "Mourning Widow" which was a small new plant for me in 2006 and is even smaller now in 2007. We had drought this summer but I watered once a week. I'm worried about it. It's odd because I've never had problems growing Geraniums before.

Very nice fall colors of Rozanne. I'll see if I can get some of my fall colors.

I think this is a blue one, there are two planted in that area. And one is called Summer Skies, and this one could be Jolly Bee, not sure right now.
