Hi, new to this site from NW UK. This is a seedling that I have grown for the last 4 years. It is Characias Wulfenii, but is very different to others I have grown. Has anyone else seen one similar? Can you correctly name it?

Sorry I can´t help you Alan, I have no idea what it is. But I´m sure David (euphorbfreak)or Marie (gardenbug) will when they see this . Welcome to GardenBuddies, we can´t wait to see more of your garden.

Hi Uforbia, What you have appears to be the species Euphorbia characias. It is distinguished from the subspecies wulfenii by the dark red nectar glands that give the bloom head such a distinct appearance. In Euphorbia characias ssp wulfenii, the nectar glands are yellow. There is a cultivar Euphorbia characias 'Portuguese Velvet' that has blooms like this and the leaves truly have almost a velvety touch to them. Welcome to Gardenbuddies!

Thanks for the replies. I did think it was Portugese Velvet, but the foliage & stems seem so different on mine. The foliage is sparse at the bottom and its almost tropical in appearance. (See the last picture)It is very hardy and is now around 5 years old. Ive lso attached 2 pix of our other Wulfenii which I believe is called John Tomlinson. Both have been grown from seed.
