I fell in love with Euphorbia on a trip to Oregon but I live in zone 3. In 2006 I started a few seeds of Euphorbia Ssp. wulfenii. I have one plant to survive in approximately 14 inch pot. This spring before safe to go outdoors it is blooming and in poor light. When I can get it outdoors (snowing yet :-( if I cut it back I wonder if I can see anything near a specimen plant by wintering over each year? Has anyone tried them in tub culture vs. on site? Thanks Butrscoch / the desperate gardener (sometimes)

I grew a different species--Euphorbia mellifera--indoors for several years before putting it outside. It's doable, as long as you do what the Euphorbia wants. They originate in an region with dry rainless summers and wet mild winters. They like full sun--and indoors, as much sun as possible. In a pot, it would need some summer water, but not consistently moist. In winter, it should start "nodding" as it begins to form its bloom. After the bloom is done, you can cut those stalks out at the base when you see the new growth starting. They have long deep roots, so a deep pot is best. And do take care when cutting--the sap is toxic and highly irritating. Best to wear gloves and by all means avoid getting any in your eyes.
