Another catalogue arrived today. It lists
-E. burrowmil silver, creamy yellow, 24", variegated foliage
-E. black pearls, green with black anthers, drought tolerant.

At a price too.... No illustrations.

Wow, GB, you get much more interesting catalogs than I do!

Both of these are E. characias strains. 'Burrow Silver' is not very vigorous and difficult to propagate, and doesn't come true from seed, and will like fade from the commercial market eventually. There is another similar one 'Emmer Green' that is much more vigorous but doesn't come true from seed either. Recently I saw yet another variegated one that is supposed to be better than both of these, but I have forgotten the name.

Here's a pic of the Emmer Green (borrowed from peterpaultje of the Euphorbia_etc. group on Yahoo)

Euphorbia characias 'Emmer Green'

E. 'Black Pearl' has darker leaves than the species, and has very distinct dark red/brown nectaries on the bloom head. This one I would love to have. There's a picture of the bloom head at

WOW are those healthy specimens. More to print off and consider. Thanks David!

(I do love epimediums...maybe even more...no, I can't say that here.)

Love that Emmer Green specimen David. How hardy is it? Is it commercially available? Can't wait to get that Digging Dog Nursery catalog and see all the euphorbias they have for sale.

I've not been able to find a US source for Emmer Green. From the few reports I've read of it, it apparently is better suited to pot culture than the garden. Pity, it looks so nice!

But I did find the new variegated strain that supposedly outperforms both Barrow Silver and Emmer Green in robustness and vigor. It's called Euphorbia "Silver Swan". It hasn't made its way to the US either :-(

You can read about Silver Swan and see a picture at

(Plants magazine is a lot of fun to browse through.)
