This cactus gave me a nice surprise when I went out to the greenhouse today! David-just wondering...what kind is this one?

That's beautiful Carol! I love that color. I don't know the species, but it is a Mammillaria.

Thanks David and SusanQ! David I took your lead and looked it up in my BIG Exotica book and narrowed it down by photo to a choice of three Mammillaria cactus. Then I went to the descriptions and ruled out two of the choices as one described the flower as red and the other described its flower as being rose-colored. That left Mammillaria ortiz-rubiona that exactly described the growing habit of my cactus as ~a cluster of globe shaped plants, covered with white spines and white woolly oreoles; and the flowers were described as "rosy-yellow". Would you call the color of these flowers rosy-yellow? I was thinking orange...but red and yellow = orange...hmm... :-/

Carol, I checked some other pics and it didn't quite seem to match..the M. ortiz-rubiona (aka Mammillaria candida) seemed to have different stamens, but very "furry" like yours. Mammillaria are so difficult for me to identify since there are so many species and hybrids too, but I know an expert might know right off. I like the form of Mamms.

Thanks David! I agree! I was going through scads of descriptions of Mammillaria and I was getting dizzy! I'm trying to get proper ID tags on my small cactus collection as people are always asking me "what is that called" and I'd like to respond better than with a blank stare. ;-) I've been growing this one since it was a little button-that's a six inch pot. The brown bits are tree seeds that showered over everything last summer and got stuck in all my cactus-it's really difficult to get that out. Here's a full photo of it. I don't know how that plastic iguana got in there! Atmosphere I guess.

I love that iguana! Yours has done so well--most of mine have passed on to cactus heaven, where I hope they rest in peace. You might also check out www.desert-tropicals.com, click on Botanical Names, M, Mammillaria, where they have about 150 species online, all with pictures. This is a favorite online reference of mine.
