Does any one have pictures of a particular bonsai tree that you have photographed from beginning to present? As a beginner, I am in awe of all your wonderful trees and love the pictures of "start-present." Thanks for the inspiration!

Oh I have a few actually, but heres one I still have as a work in progress, currently languishing in the garden. Its a Black Alder that I found as a tiny seedling way back in 2002. It had a nice kink in it and I thought I could use that. First pic shows it planted in an empty ice cream container(I should have planted it out but where i was living I was without a real garden as such) Then I trimmed it back hard and planted it on a slant to encourage the growth pattern for semi cascade style (cut and grow is one way of getting a thicker trunk quickly) Here it is in march 2005, geting the shape now Now june 2005 after much unimpeded growth September 05, lookin good! August 06, getting there! And here it is in winter 06, after late pruning, just showing the basic skeleton, which is the framework of any bonsai Here it is in april 07, during a repot. Its getting good taper now April 07 again, now in full leaf Using suspended weights to anchor that branch down and here it is now, afetr a winter in the ground(my pup got hold of the pot and dragged it round the garden in December, I wasnt happy, so had to plant it out!) a bit of die back i think, will have to look at that! (The big branch at the top isnt part of the design, its there to increase vigour-known as a sacrifice branch)

Thanks for the great pictures Treelover.... I have quite a few citrus trees in pots right now. I am thinking of trying to steer one of them towards a future bonsai. When is the best time to drastically cut them back? Before the start sprouting new leaves or after its finished fruiting?

Are your citrus mature fruiting trees? I find citrus awkward for bonsai when young,as they will have a growth spurt then just stop growing for ages. Also they are very stiff and would be clip and grow only I'd think, wiring might just snap the branches. When young i'd prune anytime during the growing season, but I've not had much experience with citrus to be honest.
