Hi, I just picked up this Bougainvillea at a local nursery for $3. I want to cut it back and try to train it into a bonsai. Can anyone give me some helpful hints in where I should cut it back? Im not to discerning on the "style."

Thanks

Well it looks a little small for bonsai but can't really tell from a photo. Either way it needs a major cut back if thats what you intend doing with it. I've never had a boughie so i don't know how they react to hard pruning.

the right branch can be wired down so it is almost harizontal and pruned were the small twigs are seen. Sowill have a base for creating a foliage pad there
the vertical branch can have all the small twigs shortened so you have another foliage pad there . These branches will bear flowers
If you prune very drastically ie down to the trunk flowering will be delayed
this way the present shape can be imprved by pinching the new shoots as they lengthen
it would be easier to explain with a drawing
but my computer skills are very basic
the vertical stem will need removal of the first small branch coming off to the right
so you get some more space. If you are not happy with wiring you can try hanging weights
on the branch to make it horizontal
dont wire immediately after watering

I just think its way too small and thin to be even thinking of bonsai. I'd cut it back hard and plant it in a very very big container, let it just grow for a few years.
