Thank you Susan , I have wired it into this shape, the wire has to be removed quite frequently, as the trunk thickens, and replaced so that the wire does not cut into same.

I had a serissa, but it didnt do well.(Bought from Homebase for a fiver)
Its recovering upstairs, put lots of new growth which then withered! I have kept it watered well but its no good-its going in the bin!

Hi Larry,
Yes, know what you mean. Most of those sold at places like Homebase, diy stores, are like the ones I have tried previously, Chinese varieties, which, as I have learnt over the years are not so tough as the Japanese varieties, these have a much more 'leathery leaf', if you know what I mean and are much stronger in growth and hardiness, and are also much, much easier to look after through the winter months.

Hello Kath,

I was just looking at your serissa. I think its one of the most beautiful plants I have ever seen. I have only been gardening for about a year, but I have always been fascinated with bonsai. I know theres a lot to know about it, and I don't want to start until i have read a book about it. I guess the best thing to do is buy a book. I will check the library to see if I can borrow one first I guess. I wonder if I could buy some used books on ebay.

The blue vase really adds to the beauty.

Mines dead now, they should not sell these plants as beginner bonsai because they do need some work to keep them alive!

Kath, I've been wondering - does it naturally grow in that lovely spiral shape or is that the result of your training?

Thanks Floyd, yes there are many books available on the subject of which I have several. The two I refer to the most are 'Bonsai' by Harry Tomlinsin ISBN 0-7513-0139-6 and 'The Bonsai School' by Craig Cousins ISBN 1-856056-82-1 both with clear and simple explanations and illustrations.

As I said above Larry the one above is Japanese with more leathery leaves and a much stronger grower than the normal Chinese variety which has softer leaves and is more difficult to keep, reckon you had one of the latter varieties.

Hi Mara, the natural growth is upward, like the growth in the pot above soil level. I let it grow to approx. 10cms high, then trimmed it back leaving one strong stem to grow further and leaving all the small lateral stems. When it was approximately 20 cms long, I wired it into the spiral shape and carefully bent it into a downward direction, also trimmimg back the small lateral stems.

If you look carefully you can see the end of the wire by the bottom growth. This wire has to be periodically removed and replaced to avoid scarring of the bark.

I suppose I should have guessed how much fine art is involved in this bonsai. Wiring and rewiring! that must be very delicate work. But the result certainly makes it worthwhile!

In spring and in the summer he did very wel, ut now it is winter and he lost a lot of his leaves and I thought it was dying
But now he doing wel and just making new leaves.
So I hope I can get him through the winter and hope he will recover.
