I have recently purchased a Chinese Elm which i intend to go dormant this winter. The location i which i keep it, should allow dormant. I live in England, and the tree is in a east facing window I have purchased a 75Watt Grolux bulb to help with lighting when necessary. Can you please tell me, if you know the distance i should position the bulb away from the tree. Secondly how long should i have the light on and are there any periods of the day in which i should put the light on. Thanks Sam

Sam, PLEASE PUT IT OUTSIDE, or you run the risk of loosing it. I know they are sold at some DIY stores as 'Indoor Bonsai', but this is not true, ok they will survive for a little while indoors, but thrive more profusely outdoors. The air is much too dry for them indoors, especially through the winter months when you have the central heating on. Mine stays in the same position outdoors all year, full sun in summer, just keep it evenly moist. It looses some of its leaves during late winter but has a profusion of new leaves in Spring

Hi, I have done some research on the conditions that my tree requires in the winter. Its sited in my bedroom window. Believe it or not i can keep the temperature in winter in my room at between 8-14'C in the day time and it drops lower at night. I have an electric humidifier which can keep the room at upto 70% RH. Also i have a artificial light above it for extra light when needed. Books i have read tell me that this is sufficient to let the tree go dormant ( if feed is stopped and watering is reduced) Could this work. I ask the question as i would like to have the tree on display inside. Sam

It might work for a while Sam, but you will have a much healthier tree if you place it outdoors
