I have recently got a chinese elm. All new growth is vast and healthy.

On the compost surface there is a white speckling all over. it isnt noticable from a distance yet if you look close you can see tim=ny white speckles. I have looked at diseases but i cant find anything. Is it a problem? what should i do?

Hi again Sam, sorry forgot you had given me info previously about your tree. If you're using tapwater it could be the calcium in the water that is causing this. You can brush it off and a couple of waterings with cold tea usually clears it - Kath

Hi,

I have been watering the tree with rain water. i keep a tank of it in the back garden, i found out it is softer than normal tap water. Is it possible its a disease they the speckles seem to be linking like a net in some small areas.

From your description I don't think its a fungus, but you could always give a spray with a fungicide of course. Are you sure it's not water/dew droplets laying on a web from a minute spider!
One more question is your soil free of moss?

Maybe your image files are too big Sam. Under 60k you can use the 'paperclip' above, or you can re-size them using the far left 'icon' above.

Yes Hawthorn's are well worth training and 'yes' they have to be left out doors all the time.

Re bonsai fgurines/netsuke, I would send an email to Kaizenbonsai, they might know, have always found them to be very helpful - Kath

Thanks, ill contact Kaizen bonsai.

The Hawthorne is 6" tall and has small shoots above halfway (4 pair to the crown). As i am new to this i would like to use this to try wiring/shaping techniques. I take that this time of the year it should be left outside to go dormant and shaping/wiring should begin in spring.

The leaves are quite large (i feel) are they made small through root puning and genral pruning over time
