My Grandfather planted two mimosas in front of his house (next door). He trimmed them so that they stayed bush shaped and so this year they will be a large bush. He took the nearly 6 foot long limbs and spread their seeds and limbs down a long hill in compost (we are trying to fill a large dip). So now we have approx. 100 little Mimosas in the woods. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to bonsai one and how it turned out. JKSympson

Wonderful way to 'fill a large dip' Jesse. In respect of bonsai, I am trying some of the 'Acacia family' at the moment, biggest problem is to date, top growth is 'prolific', but side growth is not so 'strong', will let you know how it goes in the future - Kath

I live in the South East so not so cold as by Larry (Treelover), but our winters are no longer as cold as they used to be, the past few years the lowest has been -5c/23f and hardly any snowfall, but quite dreary/grey/damp/rainy weather - Kath

Here we go, easy to find Acacia references in Australia, where there are hundreds of species. "Acacia Acacias are trees and shrubs mostly grown for their small yellow flowers, which grow profusely in fluffy little pom-poms. As bonsai they must be pruned back severely in early spring as they are prolific growers. All acacias need as much light as can be provided, and should be turned often to maintain even growth. In summer, they enjoy going out to the patio for fresh air, and can be left out until night temperatures start to fall below 13 degrees C (55 degrees F). They like a lot of water and fertilizer when in active growth. They require cool conditions (not less than 10 C; 50 F) and less water in winter, although they should never be allowed to dry completely. If they decide to drop their leaves in winter, simply keep them barely moist until new growth appears in spring. The best for bonsai are Acacia paradoxa (Kangaroo Thorn - previously known as A.armata), A.dealbata (the Mimosa sold by florists in the USA) and A.podalyriifolia (Queensland silver wattle, which will tolerate higher winter temperatures). " The quote was from this site: http://farrer.riv.csu.edu.au/ASGAP/APOL6/jun97-3.html Another reference said it was difficult to get them to flower as a bonsai.

Yeah they have beautiful flowers and would be amazing if you could get this kind of bonsai to flower real well. JKSympson

I can't find the mimosas. *sob* I'm hoping either they all either just lost their leaves and I don't know what they look like with out them or their all dead. Either way there will be more.

I like little brother, that photo is just a stunner. Now you've reminded me of some Acacia seed I meant to plant, sigh. Mostly for trees which are great for native birds, but a few promising ones might fall into bonsai pots.
