Just had a check over my bonsai sitting out the winter in the garden and thought I'd post a pic or two of my Forsythia. This is one I made from an air layer when I pruned our front garden shrub a while ago. Its ready for some heavy pruning now, just gotta wait till the frosts have all gone before commencing work on it.
from above:
round the back:
and how Im gonna prune it: (compare with first pic)

Thanks Jesse. The stem looks pretty thick doesnt it, yet it was already that thick when I air layered it. Thats the advantage with that technique, you can get good thick stems that instantly look aged. This is not the best species for bonsai though because the stems are hollow so only really old stems gets good healed scars, plus the leaves arranged in pairs like maples, so you always end up with 2 of everything and often have to either remove one branch or prune it back harder.

Yea Peter Chang talks about different techniques or air layering in a section of his book. I've sadly misplaced my copy. Have to search the house tonight. Just had it hm....

Ah, Peter Chan would be the book that the toddler left in the laundry... The pages that aren't stuck together are very informative, sigh.

Well, its just sat in the garden slowly growing away. Not really a bonsai yet, just a plant with potential-maybe 5 yerars from now i'll have something.
