This was dug out from the front garden last year as it was too big for that spot. I transferred it to the back garden and a piece of it came off and got planted seperately with the intention of training for bonsai later. Well, a year on and its quite a size, but very straight,no movement, and fuchsia is very stiff, doesnt bend easily. Also I cut off a stem I wanted to keep by mistake!

When they are that size they are usually very tough Larry and can take no end of punishment/mis-handeling This is one that I've been training over more than a 10 year period. Was first in my neighbour's garden for over 10 years. Un-beknown to me she dug it up and threw it into an unused coal bunker. 3 weeks later I asked her "Where is your fuchsia", "In the coal bunker" she replied. As you can imagine it was all but dried out, so I placed it in a bucket of water for over a week and then, see for yourself . Potted-up, and one year later
Kept in training, now 5 years later, this pic. taken last year. Fuchsia Magellanica Variant Gracilis

All the Magellanica's are 'easy-growers', but for bonsai-work one does have to keep pruning them hard-back - Kath

Thanks Kath :) Do you think my Fuchsia will bud out lower down on the trunk-would like to get some taper.

I would prune back to 'A', that way you are getting rid of that 'ugly-bulge'
and I would plant up to the level of 'B', in a large pot or open ground. This will encourage growth further down, as you see from my 1st. pic above it looked as if the new growth was just coming up from under soil level straight from the root area, but in fact it was coming from the old stem, now the trunk - Kath

Thasnka Kath,it is planted out in the garden to about that level(B), and i think i will wait till i see signs of life before I cut to A. I know what you mean about the bulge, potential for severe reverse taper!
