I have been reading a book. It says that to encourage branches were you desire you should cut back the leaf to the stork and this will let the new shoot grow is this true, and are there any tips.

if you want to encourage new branches you need to cut the branch you want back.
The best is to look at the branch and then search for an 'eye', also for more branches you need more then one eye. Always check the position of the eye, pointing outside or inside, because in this way the branch will tart to grow.
