I have a 4 year old Stella Cherry tree that seems to be having problems. I found out after planting that it is not suitable to our zone (why they sell trees that won't survive our winter is beyond me). The tree bark is starting to split and the leaves are kind of droopy. Any ideas what the problem could be. Thanks for any info.

Did you buy this recently? If you did I really think you might have a case for contacting the place you bought it from. Where is the bark splitting? I have a cherry and the bark naturally peels and the leaves droop but that's the habit of the tree. Do you have a photo?

My Stella is one year old. It seems to be growing well, but I am not sure about what I'm looking at. Each and every leaf has two little reddish colored nodules at the base of it. They do not look in the least bit like aphids. However, many of these little nodules have little ants on them. Is this normal? I haven't been able to find a picture on the web, or any other advice to answer this question. Also, several leaves are drooping now - in May zone 5b - Michigan. Is that normal?

Thanks for tolerating my ignorance, you are a gem!

Can you post a picture? The nodules should be harmless ie some sort of sap from the tree that attracts the ants. I've just had a look at my own tree. It could be the buds for next years leaves. Are they next to the branch, where the leaf joins the stem?

Hi, and thanks for your reply. These nodules are kidney shaped, and yes, they are at the base of each leaf where it joins the stem. Last time I checked there were even more of them than before, but none have grown any bigger. Maybe they are for next year's growth. It helps to see your picture. I'm going to go outside right now and have another look to see how mine compares.

Unfortunately, I don't yet own a digital camera. Thanks for your input.

My Stella took a while to get going, but now it is flourishing and is a tree that stays small compared to others. Pruning helped and fertilizing as well as I have my cherry trees sprayed for bugs in the spring.

Galanthophile was right about my cherry setting out leaf buds for the next year. This year we treated the lawn for japanese beetle grubs and had NO problem with beetles. The tree looks beautiful! Now I am patiently waiting for cherries! My apple tree, planted the same year, gave us two very yummy apples this year, even though it wasn't supposed to fruit for another couple of years. I am so excited to have our own fruits, can't wait!

My Stella Cherry is only new this year. It is bleeding sap with some ants. It is in bloom. We lost a new cherry last year the same way. What is wrong. We did put this new one in the same place.

Leroy,
You may have borers, check the tree for
Small holes that may appear in the trunk from which a gummy sap oozes. During the growing season some of the leaves and branches may wilt and die, turning brown. Since borers usually attack weakened or stressed trees, it is important to maintain their health with enough water and proper fertilizer. There are two types of borers that affect cherry trees; the Shothole Borer and the Peachtree Borer. The tunnels created by the borers interfere with the flow of water and nutrients within the tree. Keep the tree healthy by watering regularly and applying a fertilizer. The trunk and large branches can be sprayed with an insecticide designed to kill borers, however they can be very difficult to control. Check
with the place where you bought the tree.

First, I have never planted a tree before. I just bought a Stella Cherry Tree and planted it. I then found out it will likely only get direct sunlight from about 2PM til maybe 6 or 7PM this summer. It says to plant in full sun. It has been in the ground 1 week. Should I move it?
Second, they say to keep it well watered. What does this mean? Does it like to always have it's feet wet? Should it be watered daily?
I don't know if it matters but it's from Gurneys and it's a STD 2-4'.
TIA

Jess26s
I think I would move the tree where it will
get at least 6 hrs of sun each day.
I would start out watering the tree everyday for
the first week and 2 times a week for the next

couple weeks and then once a week for the
rest of the year. I wouldn't fertilize for the
first year, you might burn the tender roots.

Thank you very much for your advice. I will move it today. Thanks also for the watering advice. Like I said I've never planted a tree before and I would really like it to do well!
