I once bought a lovely tree in the get-rid-off bin at a local nursery who couldn't identify it. I bought it as a charity case and finally identified it as a balsam poplar....a tree that brought back so many fond memories of my childhood! It has a sweet spring scent much like the cottonwoods...permeates the air and I go back often to its emerging leaves all summer to sniff that exhilirating scent. These charity plants, by the way, seem to appreciate being given a chance...I have loads of them and bring them back to pristine condition with love and manure. They ALWAYS reward me! So, look for them.....I have lovely one-dollar roses and marked down shrubs all over the place.
