I recently bought a japanese magnolia or saucer magnolia..i think they are the same..and I planted it about 10-15 ft from my house and 10-15 ft from my driveway. When it grows up, will this be too close to the house or driveway? I don't want it to touch the house or drop flowers on the driveway. Also, After planting it, I read online that it MUST be protected from wind. Just about every spot on my property has pretty high winds daily. Does it need to be protected just so the flowers don't fall off? Right now it seems the flowers it gets last about 2-3 days once opened then turn brown and fall apart. Is this normal or is the wind making them fall apart too soon?

I re-planted my magnolia in an area that was protected from wind as I nearly lost it..then never got around to moving it. It's got a two foot trunk and twenty foot branches but flowers profusely and is about 4 or 5 feet from the house. No problems with it yet. I actually like its "sprawling" look, like a chandlier with it's "crystal" white and pink water-lily-like blossoms. It's a well-behaved tree...even other peoples' trees and there are LOTS in coastal B.C.

oh so it is still in the windy spot? and its doing fine. Does the wind blow the flowers off and is this why people say to protect it from wind? or are the branches fragile or something. Right now mine is only 3 ft tall and gets flowers one after the other..they just don't stay pretty for very long.

No, I put it away from the wind in amongst some mock orange and then forgot about it. The blossom don't last that long. Mine just about died out in the wind, I think from the cold, but we get some really harsh winds here in the winter and nothing comes off this magnolia at all. Other people have them all over the place here and don't seem to have a problem...but I don't think their blooms are long-lasting. Mine aren't.

Where do you live? In what state? My tree seems to be doing fine, It's been in the ground only 2 weeks or so and plenty of green shoots coming out. Maybe 4 or 5 flowers at any given time. But they sure don't last long
