I just received two Japanese Red Maples in the mail. They are about 1 inch tall and planted in dixie cups. How long should I wait to transplant them into real pots? And will I be doing the trees harm by keeping them inside? I know that some plants need to be out in the elements to toughen them up.

I would go ahead and plant them in a small pot about a 6" one, and place them outside in the shade.

I agree. Japanese Maples do best in almost full sun, and when I tried bringing in a bonzi seedling.. I killed it in an east window. They need the seasons, and more sun that you'd expect. 1/2 day sun, east is best...and shelter from wind as leaves wind burn easily. There are many varieties..I have 7 or 8 now... I adore them...and my hot zone doesn't do them that well.... PS. they like soil a bit acid... so some redwood bark , coffee grounds or sulfer added helps them.
