My back yard (about 50x50') has not a single tree. I'd love to plant one, but I was told that the soil is shallow because the mountainside was cut into to make a level place for the houses/yards. I don't know how deep the soil goes since I haven't dug to figure it out. It was suggested to me that if you go a couple feet down you'll hit solid rock. Is there any tree that can thrive in that kind of situation? Thanks!

Hmmm well if the soil is that shallow there are 2 options i can think of. Conifers like Cypress tend to have shallow roots as do Rhododendron.

I was thinking of Arbutus....they grow on the sides of mountains! In fact, they seem to resent GOOD soil and are hard to transplant so you have to buy from a nursery....they're beautiful too.
