My back yard (about 50x50') has not a single tree. I'd love to plant one, but I was told that the soil is shallow because the mountainside was cut into to make a level place for the houses/yards. I don't know how deep the soil goes since I haven't dug to figure it out. It was suggested to me that if you go a couple feet down you'll hit solid rock. Is there any tree that can thrive in that kind of situation? Thanks! Landscaping Material Land For Sale Redding Landscaping

Hmmm well if the soil is that shallow there are 2 options i can think of. Conifers like Cypress tend to have shallow roots as do Rhododendron.

I was thinking of Arbutus....they grow on the sides of mountains! In fact, they seem to resent GOOD soil and are hard to transplant so you have to buy from a nursery....they're beautiful too.
