I have a question about the purple majesty millet grass that I am growing this year.
I have a small clump and am seeing seeds now. They are purple now. Will they turn brown when ripe enough to gather?

I don't know the answer but I have another question. If I plant this, will it seed itself in for next year?

Hmmm... I don't know the answer to that question. I'm growing it for the first time this year. Don't you just love this plant??? I noticed yesterday that mine is also covered with those small round seeds. I'm wondering if the finches are going to find them before I get to harvest any!

No they don't turn brown - they are purple to gather.

I guess I will need to gather some now. My little plant didn't produce an awful lot of flowers but I did get maybe 6-7 seed heads out of it. Next year I will start more to see if I can increase the clump.

I think I would gather the seeds and bring them in as they are a favorite food for birds and you may not have any left to reseed. let alone recognize them in the spring as they are almost identical to other grasses at first and you may pull them out! Done that before myself.

Jodi, or anyone else that grow from seed, did you plant your seeds this Spring and did they germinate? Just curious as to required sewing conditions for next Spring. Do they need bottom heat to germinate ? I just saved some from the ones I bought this year. I love the beautiful contrasting color.

I planted my seeds this spring. I have found with other grasses that they don't seem to want to grow till it is nice and warm outside. Once it got really warm it grew like mad. I did not use any bottom heat, in fact I grew them out on my sunny deck till they were big enough to go into the ground. I have collected all of the seeds that the plant made so far and am saving them for next year.
