Is there a general rul as to when grasses set seed? Someone I know has a beautiful grass (I think it is a grass) growing on her property. The gardener put it in and she does not know the name. I thought if I could take some seed, I would try to grow some.

I find that grasses often need dividing and that would be a fine time to go visit your neighbour's gardener! The inflorescenses develop at different times, some ripening now, others earlier here. But maybe looking for seedlings in spring is another option if the seeds have already scattered.
