I went to a zoo plant sale today here in Memphis, TN and while most of the plants for sale were identified, this one was not, but it was too beautiful for us not to buy. I've been doing searches online and the closest thing I can find to match it is the Purple Fountain or the Purple Majesty Millet, but it doesn't quite look like either in mine or my husbands opinion. Can anyone help me figure this one out?

Thanks in advance.

Ashley

That looks just like the Purple Majesty Millet grass that I grew from seed last year. It is an annual so collect the seeds for next year. It is a lovely plant and very showey in the yard.

You think so? I didn't have much success finding good pictures of the Purple Majesty Millet online that look like the one I have. Thank you so much for helping me out.

One other question...when do you recommend I collect the seeds? We aren't planning on putting it in the yard until we buy a house, but our current residence has a large sun room that is nice and warm and gets great direct sunlight most of the day. It's basically our plant room. It's probably not the best house plant, but it was too beautiful to pass up...and we plan to do quite a bit with the yard when we get our house, so it will eventually find it's home outside.

You'll know when to get the seeds as the head will start to open up and you'll see the seeds wanting to burst right out.
With the one that I had the resulting seeds the next year did not produce purple leaves on the plants. They were green but I still got a purple seed head. Maybe they crossed with other grasses in my yard.

Our hospital and other places plant this grass en masse and it is so beautiful. But it isn't hardy in Boise. Unfortunately.
