Hello. I am thinking of planting some grass along my fence line and I was wondering what suggestions everyone might have. The area I am wanting to plant them in is pretty shady and I would like to have perennials that get really really tall. I am in zone 6. Suggestions??

Thanks,
Kim

Some shade loviers:

Most of the selections that can take the shade are shorter, but Bottlebrush Grass (Hystrix Patula) might work. The leaves are one foot, but the plumes are on 3-4 ft spikes. Prefers moist, but well-drained soil.

Perhaps Nandina Domestica? It gets tall and provides the screening that is similar to grass. Otherwise, an Australian Tree fern. Although it would be tender and need to be lifted in order to survive the frost.

Another choice might be a clumping bamboo?

Just some thoughts~~~

Oooh, love the Australian tree fern and the clumping bamboo. Great suggestions! I do have a sunny area also that I could plant some grasses. I saw some the other day that were probably about 15 feet high. Any idea what they may have been? They were gorgeous!

The tallest grass I know which will tolerate a good amount of shade is Chasmanthium latifolium, Northern Sea Oats. With just a couple hours of sun a day, it can reach 3-4' tall.
