Looks to me like Phalaris arundinacea. Phalaris can be invasive and is best with an eye kept on it. It can be planted nicely in a large-ish pot in the ground to allow it to spread and grow slightly while the 'spread' is kept in check.

Just heard frommy landscaper chap and he said he planted Glyceria maxima"(variegata and it should grow to abour 30 inches. And it will shed its leaves and in Spring pruduce new. I am ok with this height as its a real stunner with its pink varigation but still would have preferred a dwarf grass so may move in the Spring.

Kath just saw your post, that glyceria is a monster before you know it it will have over run your garden.It needs to be kept under control
