Today I planted what I hope will eventually be visually blocking grasses from our neighbours broken fence and hedge. I planted 3 maiden grass (gracillimus) along the back of the rockery and 2 of japanese silver grass (miscanthus sinensis) along the brick wall in the perennial bed.

I must say, I'd patch the fence when he isn't looking. The grasses will look fabulous against the evergreens Jodi! (And yes, it is not yet 5am, but DH snores...)

Jodi, since you asked for one, here is a picture of the purple majesty millet. It is not hardy, but I've read it it will self-sow if encouraged, so it should be forever in the garden. All of my plants turned out the same deep purple/black, though I was expecting some variations as it was second generation seed. They do start out green though, getting their purple colouring when they have 8 sets or so of leaves, so don't toss them early thinking they'll stay that way. Also keep them potted up, don't let them get rootbound, or they will start to bloom and stay at that smaller size. They were an easy, warm germer. I'll be starting mine in March to have good-sized plants for greenhouse sales by May, but am going to see how they self-sow as well. Seed should be ready in the next week or two. Let me know if you'd rather have something else. If it stops raining I'll be collecting lots of seeds soon.

Oh NO Taryn - I definately want the purple millet seed! I need the color contrast and I love the seed heads! I will be very happy if it decides to self sow too! A real eye popper!

Yes Jodi, how'd it turn out? Not that it was the best summer for grasses, but still would like to know. Bella, the seeds should be practically falling off when they are ready. Mine are just now ready. You get lots of schrapnel in with them, and they're a pain to clean, so I plant the lot, and don't bother separating any more. Back to transplanting... Taryn

Marie & Taryn: sorry - but you will have to wait until next year for the photo. You see I had this problem this summer - a groundhog family who ate everything. My grasses I hope will survive but on looking at them earlier this week they were green and about 8" tall. And Marie we did patch the fence. Here is a photo of the fixing in the process. It's all done now.
Look hard and you may see the grass stumps.
