I had posted this on the Garden forum, but thought I'd post here too. This grass was planted just last year, so it's still a 'baby.' I'm afraid if Hurricane Isabel comes through with heavy rain and wind, all the flower stems will be on the ground, so I'll enjoy it while it still looks beautiful.

That is some baby! It is wonderful. I put in a real baby this year and don't have flowers, just the leaves so far. Now I know what to look forward to. Mary

Marcia I like this also. Are the flowers pink or red?

There are so many miscanthus that I couldn't suggest which one you have Dogman. One tall green one I have is Miscanthus malepartus. It survives our winters, storms and all. Other miscanthus I like are M. sinensis Huron Sunrise, M.s.Morning Light, and M.s. Sarabande.

Marciam, how did your zebra grass do over the winter? I had planted 4 clumps (admittedly late in the season) and none of them survived. I'm kind of bummed about it. Just curious how another Z5er handled it.

These grasses absolutely don't want to be planted late in the season. Most grasses in fact aren't capable of growing new roots in autumn. It's always better to plant them in spring - so worth another try, now, Meig!

Thanks, Gardenfiend. I understand now about warm season and cold season grasses. I just picked up three more zebras and will plant them as soon as this rain stops.

Be careful where you put it, Meig--it gets huge! After just three years the stems emerging from the ground cover at least a square yard, if not more territory. And I'm afraid digging any of it out would require an axe! I'll look to see if I have any photos from last fall.

This photo is from October 2005. Not a very good picture, but you can see how much space the grass is taking up now. The fence is 8 feet high and you can't see the arbor behind the grass. The flowers (inflorescence) form on top of the grass from which comes the grass seed, Karalyn. Not what I think of when I think of a flower.

Marcia, how tall is the arbor? I just planted a Zebra next to my 7'3/4" arbor and I wonder now if it will overwhelm it.

Meig, the blue wooden arbor is about 6-8 feet down the hill from the grass, which is one reason the grass hides it from this angle. My arbor is about 6 1/2 feet tall. The height of the grass varies--in rainy summers it grows taller. And I was wrong about the height of the fence--it is 6 feet tall, not 8. But this grass grows really tall--between 7 and 8 feet at least, maybe taller. (I'm 5 feet, so it's hard for me to estimate )
