I usually do it in spring when I cut them back, but nurseries do divide now so that the small guys grow bigger for the spring and summer sales. As far as cutting them back...it depends on the variety whether they need it or not. Some I just "comb" out.

Monique - a year ago I didn't have a choice. My friend was moving so I got a lot of starters from her garden in early November. They were very slow taking off in the spring and growth has been minimal. On the other hand ...the grasses I planted in Aug. that were from a reduced table have put out twice the growth. Tell your friend to wait til spring.
