Here is a picture of my hosta, June.
I noticed today that two of the leaves have reverted to solid blue, which I've not seen on this plant before. I'm not sure what to do (if anything) - I know with other variegated plants, it's recommended to remove any foliage that has reverted, but I'm not sure about hostas. Anyone have any knowledge on this?

Wow Pat, I have not seen that before. I'm sure some of our experts will help you out. Brenda are you out there? Such a lovely plant. I have June as well and find it just gets better every year. Mary

Yes, Mary, I love it too and I already have several blue hostas, so I sure don't want this one to turn blue.

I would suggest you dig it up, separate out the solid eyes, and give them to someone who doesn't have a similar blue hosta if you don't want to keep it. Marie

I should say Jims is right, separate the different coloured part of the plant and put it in pot, and wait and see if its going to be the same next year. It is possible, depends on the change the plant made: maybe it is the genes of the parent-plant, maybe it's another reason. But: this is how we get some new Hosta's; if the change is different from what there is in Hosta's, than you have a new Hosta- if it's going back to the parent-plants you have nothing special.

Last week we were in the Hosta-garden in Diepenheim (Holland) There is an art-garden, there are more than thousand different Hosta's. We saw in more Hosta-sorts the same diverge (if that is the right word) Gerda

I just noticed yesterday that I have a variegated hosta coming up half solid blue. I have never had this before, and I have had hosta for many years. I will divide this and keep the solid in another garden to see what develops.

Just curious whether the flowers will be the same on the both parts of the plant or will even the flowers be different? If possible take picture of them both, and let us have a look! Gerda

Thanks, everyone. I'll be digging it up tomorrow and separating it. We'll see what the flowers look like.

last year june developed a blue sport which I detached and grew on.It is now planted in the garden. It is growing okay and you will see it is much more robust than the plant of june.It maybe that if left on the original plant it would take over. You will see from the state of the leaves why we grow our hostas in pots. When we first moved here 10 years ago there were no snails. Now we have monsters. This year the same thing is happening as can be seen from the second photograph.

Oh my God, Tony,I have never seen such snail damage! I too was afraid that the blue sport would take over.I did separate the two and neither is the worse for wear. Here is the blue:
and here is the lovely June:

your sport is just like mine so it must be quite common.I think it might take over if not seperated off. That is minor slug and snail damage by our standards. We cannot usually grow them in the garden.

Patsy - I should save the blue sport until it has flowers - then you can see, whether it goes back to the parents - Halcyon, where June is a sport of- or is there difference... Halcyon is on my list of H. with beautiful flowers. Gerda

This is offpost kinda, but My mother in law left some hosta's in a garden off the front porch. Early this spring My dh and I decided to put a waterfall/pond in using an old water traf, and rocks outta some creek beds, and such. I wondered if the hostas would make it as a water plant? And they have here is a view of them, that I planted in the waterfall itself I just thought I'd share the glory of hosta's. I need to take more pic's and I'll update you all. About the blooming though I noticed they have not done that yet? I wonder if it is too much water? Any suggestions? Heather

Heather It looks lovely, from what I can see. Is it possible for you to post a larger photo of your waterfall? Brenda

Hi 4myfamily, I have two varigated hostas that I planted as bulbs in the summer of 2004. I thought it was last year, but I stand corrected. Neither of mine have bloomed yet either. I was thinking that since mine were planted as bulbs they would be slow to bloom. I am not sure as I have never grown hostas before. Beverly SW Missouri-USA

Hi 4myfamily I am glad to hear that at least some of your hostas are blooming. I am still just trying to keep mine alive. They are not doing as well as I had hoped in the locations that I have them. I may have to move one of them to get it to thrive. It looks as though the hydroponic method is fine for your hostas. Beverly SW Missouri-USA
