me a big beautiful green hosta and something ate it. I think it was deer that occasionally come around. There are plenty of other hostas around they never bother.

Some Hosta's have a better taste than others - those with thick leaves are less eaten in general. You could dig it up (what is left of it and the roots) and put it in a pot, then you can give it a place where it can't be eaten again. There is still time enough for re-growing this season.
