I've just last year started collecting hostas and found out I have good luck starting them from seed. Anyone know a good place to get unusual host seed? It's a lot cheaper than buying plants and I like the surprise of finding a surprise when they grow! :) Also, the shadiest place in my yard still has a lot of sun. I'd like to plant some other things that will help shade the hostas without overwhelming them. Any suggestions? I'm growing some Japanese maples, but of course they will take a long time.

You said:I'm growing some Japanese maples, but of course they will take a long time. And what about collecting Hosta's from seed? I've tried to sow seed, but they turn out to be almost always the same as the parent - in that case you'd better divide them and you have bigger plants faster. But maybe we can try to collect seeds for those who want them - is that an idea?? Gerda

I'm so new at the collecting that most of my hostas aren't big enough to divide yet! And the seeds I've started are mostly some mixed varieties that I've bought on ebay. I want to get lots of varieties.
