I had 90% effectiveness against slug damage last year with USED coffee grounds. Sooo, I used the used grounds again after having saved them all winter. I haven't made an official count but I think I have probably 30+ hostas which is not a big number compared to some of your large hosta beds. My shade garden is 3-4 years old, and between maple trees. Here's a random cross section. However, all of them look this clear of slug damage. The wind is blowing and they look it. :\

I tried fresh unbrewed coffee and had amazing results. At one point I probably had more slugs that soil. It has been a very successful experiment. I put it under rocks around the hostas where slugs are known to hide. I apply the coffee in the Spring before the hostas come out and again in the fall.

Since I have access to used coffee (economical) I am as pleased as you are...coffee, used or fresh, works! I do my application differently than you. I take a large serving spoon (restaurant size) and use the grounds to make a ring around each hosta. The ring is about an inch or more wide. They, on some 'slug level' know this is toxic and stay away. I've never done this in the fall. The way you do it might be an excellent deterrent to keep them away from the area entirely.

I'm going to have to try it again. It sure didn't work for me. But, maybe they were already at the base of the hostas, so the ring around didn't help. I always get mine from Starbucks in nice big bags. My worms in the compost pile love them too.

Interesting. I have taken to dumping my used coffee grinds at the back door where my petacites grows. Usually the plant gets some holes when it first starts to grow which increases in size exponentially as the leaf grows. At some point it looks bad enough to cut the whole thing back but this year, I don't have hardly any holes. Interesting. I am going to keep this up and see what happens. Meanwhile, I'll add a few spots. Thanks for the tip.

I have never heard of using coffee..does it work better than slug bait? I will definitely try this....My hostas are already up and have some holes...think it would still help? Wonder if it would help with DEER? LOL

I had read that it had to be fresh unbrewed coffee Tanya. It is interesting that the used coffee is working. I do not drink coffee and I get it free from the hotels on my business trips. I decided since it was free I would try it and see if it worked. Levilyla, I have not used the slug bait.

Yes, I did too. However, here using the used grounds, I can tell you that seeing is definitely believing. You should see my poor pulmonaria though. Next season it's getting some used coffee grounds too! Here it sits amidst my hostas.
