I can't seem to keep the bunnies away from my Heucheras this spring. Any ideas? Smelly deterents? Sprays? I have kids, so I need to try and stay as organic and safe as possible. Any advice would be wonderful! Jamie

Jamie, I think blood meal is touted as a good deterrent.

Yet dogs LOVE blood meal... I'm amazed because I am inundated with rabbits and they have not touched mine! They destroy many many other things though I'm sad to say. I need to cage almost everything. DH says we need a geodesic dome over our place!

They are funny with Heucheras. One garden I do has no problem but the other one they are always munching the Heucheras. Try misting them with water in a spray bottle and then sprinkling cayenne pepper on them. Seems to work as long as you reapply after it rains.

LOL. Geodesic dome! Not a bad idea! We just built a fence for our pooch this weekend, so she won't be near the beds with heuchera. I can easily add blood meal to the beds. I use cayenne pepper to keep my cat out of my houseplants; very cool that might work for rabbits, too. I did not know that. I'll give it a try today! I use marigolds to keep the rabbits out of the vegetable bed all summer. They hate the scent. It works well, along with a small fence. I may resort to planting some marigolds by each of the heucheras that are in sunny enough conditions. We'll see... Thanks for the advice. When they bloom I'll try and post some pictures. :) Jamie

I did not know that worked! Is it a particular type of marigold you use?
LOL! Could I borrow you and shotgun for a few days please? :)

Any marigold should have the same fragrance in it's leaves and blooms. I've tried several kinds. I usually fill any empty space in the veggie bed with marigolds. Once they're established, or bigged than a few inches, they work for me. I just hate to put marigolds in my perennial beds. I don't like how they look, I just use them in the veggie bed for scent. But, if I must use a few here and there in the perennial beds to deter the bunnies, I will. First, I'm trying the blood and bone meal method. And cayenne pepper, too ;) I'll keep you posted. Jamie
