I'm not sure what this is. there a couple growing along the side of our house they were previously covered by huge evergreen (they stayed green during the winter)

I'm going with Nandina domestica - bright red berries in bunches. Pretty tame ornamental that serve well to reduce the appearance of the west side of my home. Doesn't spread but does grow several feet in one season. Mine are at least 30 years old.

I don't think Nandina would be hardy in Kansas.

Yes, it's Heavenly Bamboo/Nandina domestica is hardy to zone 4 but will need covering in zone 3.

It would definitely not be hardy in zone 3! But luckily the OP appears to be located somewhere in Kansas, which is at least zone 5 and upwards, off the top of my head.
