This little shrub lives underneath my Rose of Sharon tree. It's about a foot tall and has tiny thorns that you can't see in the pics. It is deciduous. Anyone able to identify it?

Wow! That was fast! And you nailed it. I googled berberis and found that it is Berberis thunbergii 'Aurea'. Looks like I should move it to a more sunny location. That's exactly what I needed to know. Thank you so much, Taramark.
