The middle pic makes me think of Smoke Bush,(Cotinus)

The leaf shape is wrong for cotinus:

Couldn't post larger pictures due to web site size restrictions. The plant looks like it is about 2' X 2' ... maybe that will help.

The landscaper now thinks it is dwarf fleeceflower which on the internet says it is related to knotweed.

We must be getting close.

As I mentioned, I think it's Fallopia japonica, which is a knotweed (Polygonum. Certain knotweeds were reorganized into the genus Fallopia.
