I am new to this forum and hope you can help identify a plant that "came with the house" purchased by some of my family a few years back. It must be hardy, since it doesn't freeze out in zone 6 and returns to puzzle us each year, and it can't be too fussy since it is on a dry rocky bank sharing space with poison ivy and Virginia creeper. This is a good-sized plant, as you can see from the iris blades in the background, and it is not a native plant to the area [southern KY]. The curved stem with leaflets belongs with the plant, and the base of the "bloom" is bulbous. Thanks so much for some clues!

Can you take a pic without the iris? The iris bloom is blocking it's structure Looks interesting tho thanks

Looks like Dragon Arum (Dracunculus vulgaris). I've never seen one in person though so I'm not completely sure.

Kasia, thanks! I looked up photos to compare and think that is probably it. I would not have known where to start unless I had just spotted one someplace, so I really appreciate the help. Thanks to all who responded -- I am so impressed that you answered so fast and are so helpful. To Bunting -- I'm sorry the photo doesn't show everything clearly. I couldn't take another since I am not at the flower location. This photo was from earlier in the year.

it looks like Dragon Arum too but I think that is an iris bloom behind it we are seeing That is why I asked for a pic without the iris I am looking at those bulb type things below it. I think there is a seperate plant below the iris

The Dragon Arum can't be grow here in my zone as perennial if this is what it is , lucky you Does it have a foul smell? They say some of the blooms of the dragon Arum does I love it's color if that is not an iris bloom above it

I can see that the photo is a little confusing, but there is no iris bloom there. I appreciate how thoroughly you have studied it. I have one other (earlier) photo that shows a slightly different view before the bloom had fully matured. I should have sent both pics together but was afraid that was too much to upload. I think the Dragon Arum is surely correct -- it seems consistent on all major points I can spot. I don't know if there was a stinky odor when it bloomed, since it isn't nearby. I'd be delighted to have it pop up here in my own garden, too, as it looks so very exotic. [I did get a lovely surprise once upon a time when to my amazement I found I had monkshood blooming in my shade garden -- apparently planted by the birds but I know of no other plants anywhere in this area.] Thanks so much again.

I have also heard of these plants called a Voodoo Lily in Texas. Here is a web site to learn more about its cultivation. http://www.paghat.com/voodoolily.html Hope this helps.
