No answers yet? Is it a shrub or a tree? What is the habit?

Search for Rhamnus species. Some are invasive in your area. Buckthorn. http://www.nps.gov/plants/ALIEN/fact/rhca1.htm

It seems to be taking over an area that is commonly flooded in the spring and now has mostly poplar trees. It is from 6' to 15' tall about 1"-2" across trunks and there are multiple trunks coming from one area. My thought was glossy buckthorn but I didn't want to steer any answers. It doesn't have the teeth on it's leaves that common buckthorn has nor does it have the thorns at the terminal end of the buds. Is this likely what it is and does it pose the same problems as common buckthorn?
