Hello everyone. Just back from a quick trip to Florida to visit my parents in Delray Beach. I was surprised to learn that Delray (Zone 10) has pretty Japanese Gardens called Morikame Gardens. I wasn't sure what to think because they certainly can't grow Japanese maples (or conifers, except for some ground cover juniper here and there). The gardens resulted from a large immigration of Japanese nationals sometime in the 1920's. But I went anyway and it was really amazing. It was interesting to see tree-training techniques applied to tropical bushes and trees including Sea Holly and even palm trees. Here is a link to the photos I took (I am building my new garden album on smugmug): http://charlenemc.smugmug.com/gallery/4606900_MtNcZ#271697181 ....and while Mom and I were at the gardens, my Dad entertained the little one:

Hey Tanya and Suzy! Thanks for your comments. Tanya - your's was my first smugmug comment. Yay! The bonsai in question (the Bougenveilla - see below) -- has been trained since 1987. I was thinking the same thing and so luckily looked at the plaque. Only the bonsai items had plaques -- I was wondering about the identity of everything else. Suzy - I was inspired by one of your photos last year and so now I have several seedlings of Bush Morning Glory Ensign Blue growing on my windowsill!

Ahh bougenveilla...I was thinking azalea. Just beautiful..along with you under it! You are going to love the Ensign blue. It was definitely one of my favorite things last year. It spreads a bit, but not overwhelmingly so and it lasted for a long time. I think if I had deadheaded it would have been for longer..but that's way too much trouble! I need to start some of my own. I am slow with my seeds this year. I have some done since February but just as many waiting to be sown. Can't wait to see pics once they bloom for you!

Thanks for sharing Charlene. Looks like a great trip for all of you. I too love the action shot of your daughter and you look so sweet under the bougainvillea! Great pics of the garden especially the cloud tree. I really, really, really want to have a go at one of those. If I can just find a plant in one of my gardens that I can play with...

What beautiful gardens, Charlene! And is the lady in gray your Mom? She looks way too young to be a Gramma! Nice to see you and your family again!

My daughter's new grandparents-in-law winter in Delray Beach too! Great pics, Charlene. I adore Ensign Blue and have grown it for several years. It's a great cool weather bloomer and then when the weather gets really hot it starts to shut down flower production. I usually pull it out by August in my zone.
